5 Boy Bands of YesterYear

So, a little peek into how my mind works...  Last week I shared some [more] Random Googles.  One of which was Impractical Jokers.  After listening to all the old Tenderloins Podcasts, I'm now starting on the What Say You? Podcast with Sal and Q.  Both Podcasts mention Joey Fatone guest starring on the show.  How have I missed this episode?!  That prompted me to do a search of my all time favorite boyband.  As well as a few others that were popular during the late '90s- early '00s.

'N Sync

It's hard to choose my favorite from them, because I was team 'N Sync all the way.  When I was 13, it probably was I Drive Myself Crazy.  I mean.  I even had satin pj's that I insisted on wearing a tank top with.  Today, I love them all equally and blast the music when it comes on SXM's 90s on 9.

Today, we all know Justin Timberlake is married to Jessica Biel of 7th Heaven fame, and is expecting his first child.  Lance hosts a show (Dirty Pop) on SXM on Saturdays, and is married to Michael Turchin.  Joey Fatone has apparently appeared in an episode of Impractical Jokers, was on Dancing with the Stars, has been married to his wife for over 10 years (they've been together for over 20), and has a couple of kids.  Oh, he also announces on the Family Feud!  JC Chasez, whose name I still can't pronounce correctly, attempted a solo career.  He's guest-starred on a few TV shows, and rescued a 1-year-old girl in Miami, back in 2011.  Chris Kirkpatrick has played the voice of Chip Skylark on Nickolodeon's Fairly Odd Parents.  He got married in 2013 with all of the former members present.

Backstreet Boys

Ahhh the arch-nemeses of N Sync!  If you were a preteen-teen girl in the late 90s, you couldn't be all down the middle with "I love them both!"  You had  to pick one!  Even though the groups were both manufactured by the same person!  I couldn't even tell you my favorite song from them, though I can tell you that it's NOT Everybody, Larger than Life, or As Long as You Love Me!

BSB, as they were affectionately known, has toured recently, with New Kids on the BlockNick Carter attempted his own solo career, but it hasn't worked out as well as Justin Timberlake's.  AJ McLean is married with a kid, and has tried his hand as a solo artist as well, sometimes performing under the name "Johnny No Name."  Kevin Richardson apparently shares his name with a zookeeper, who was brought up first when I searched the name.  He's been married for 15 years and has a couple kids.  He and his wife met when they were working at Disney World, she was playing Belle!  He officially left BSB in 2006, and then rejoined (officially) in 2012.  Kevin's cousin Brian Littrell has also been married for 15 years and has a kid running around.  He recorded a solo Christian album post-Backstreet Boys phenomenon.  Howie Dorough, whose name I could not remember, has played the voice of Santa Claus on Dora the Explorer, and co founded a real estate development company with his brother.  And he's married with kids!

LFO

Ohhh Lord.  My all time favorite Lyte Funky Ones song has to be Summer Girls.  It came out my 8th grade year, right around the time of our class trip to Boston.  Coincidentally, I (and all of my classmates- boys and girls) was obsessed with anything A&F.  Now I'm obsessed with trying to figure out how I ever fit my ass into a pair of A&F jeans.  Not really, but it makes sense that only young teen/ preteen girls could wear a pair.

Sadly, Rich Cronin passed away in Boston in 2010 after battling Leukemia.  He appeared in VH1's Mission: Man Band in 2007 with Chris Kirkpatrick, as a way to try to reestablish his music career.  Devin Lima has appeared in several movies, the only one sounding remotely familiar being American Pie Beta House.  His real name is Harold, by the way.  Brad Fischetti caused quite a stir in the Twitter-verse back in 2012 due to some anti-abortion tweets he made.  It's been pretty quiet since then for him.

98 Degrees

They ranked somewhere between 'N Sync and Backstreet Boys for me.  They were kind of… meh.  My favorite song would have to be The Hardest Thing, mainly because it's the first time (that I remember) out of any of these bands, that cheating was addressed- in the form of them being the cheaters.

Admittedly, Nick Lachey grew interesting for me during Nick and Jessica: Newlyweds, mostly because I couldn't imagine having to live with someone with so little common sense.  We all know how that turned out and he has been married to Vanessa Minnillo Lachey since 2011.  They have two kids.  So far he's had 3 solo albums, including album of lullabies (affiliate link).  Little brother Drew has been married since 2000 to his childhood/high school girlfriend and surprise! has kids!  He was on Dancing with the Stars in 2006 and guest hosted on the The Price is Right.  Jeff Timmons has been married since 2011 and has kids.  He had a minor solo career and seems most recently to be dabbling in Electronic Dance Music.  Also of note, he was a Chippendales dancer in Vegas for a few months in 2011.  When you Google search Justin Jeffre you will find that singer is not listed as his occupation- politician is!  He's listed as being a member of the Green Party.  He was apparently arrested in 2011 for trespassing during a protest.

Hanson

The trio was actually popular before any of these groups.  Unfortunately it was also the great Devon Sawa - Jonathan Taylor Thomas debate of '95-'96.  I really couldn't stand their music or the fact that they were taking precious pages of Tiger Beat away from JTT.  Today, they're all married with kids, and are co-CEOs of a record company.

Isaac apparently saw his future wife in the 5th row of one of their concerts, giving hope fan-girls everywhere.  He's had a couple of health scares, including pulmonary embolism.  Taylor is now part of a group called Tinted Windows where he is lead singer.  He also met his wife at a show- but was introduced to her by one of his roadies.  So she wasn't screaming/crying/hyperventilating from the floor [that's what I picture was going down in Isaac's scenario.] Zac is staying pretty low in the light these days, but I did see that he (and his brothers) appeared in a Katie Perry video!

So did we all learn anything important?  Aside from the fact that we're all old, and the majority of these "teen heartthrobs" grew up and have had long and (hopefully) healthy relationships!

I love when I'm driving and there will be a throwback song playing on the radio- especially Backstreet Boys! I was convinced that if I met Brian Littrell, he would fall in love with me and we would get married lol.

  2. I was 'N Sync all the way, too!! My second pick was 98 degrees and then I LOVED Nick Lachey on Newlyweds. Pretty sure I would still watch that show if it was on today.

  3. Bahaha I thought the same about Justin! I still kind of think that way about a lot of people- except it's more "we could drink and be friends if we could ever just MEET!" Though, I don't even know how that would be possible for no other reason that I'm fairly anti-social IRL :)

  4. Oh I would definitely watch it now- the only reality tv I watch is if I'm sure there's a trainwreck about to happen! Which I guess is... most reality tv! :)

  6. I remember N Sync had a special on Pay Per View and my mom let me have like 4 of my friends over for the night and order it. That's the closest I came to seeing them live, and I'm pretty sure, the only time my mom thought it was a good idea to allow 5 preteen girls into her house for the night! :)

  9. OMG :) Sooooo I just googled Lance's husband and yummy!!!! What a hot couple! I loved NSYNC the most! I didn't grow to appreciate Hanson until much later in life because their songs used to get on my nerves but now mmmbop is just nostalgic! My favorite song by BSB was All I Have to Give. mmmmm JTT. He was probably my biggest movie star crush when I was younger. I loved watching Newlyweds!!! I just knew they weren't going to last though, sad. They both seem to be better off now! I think Jessica just played dumb because look at the business she has created for herself!! I wish I could have my own shoes/purse/clothes/fragrance line!!

Oh my goodness, this threw me wayyyy back. 98 Degrees was my absolute favorite (every time I watch Mulan I jam out to their song on that soundtrack!) And Umm-Bop (or whatever it was called) by Hanson makes me laugh so hard.

  11. Hahah I had fun! Especially looking at all of the… lesser known... members of the groups! It's good to see that only a couple that I came across have spent time in rehab through the years :)

  12. Haha ooohhh back in the day I could tell you ALL about them. I can tell you that Mr. Timberlake was the source of my obsession of anything baby blue, or Tar Heels- related! :)

  13. Lance and Justin were always my favorite. I never got into Hanson, even later on. JTT is still a cutie today- he did a couple guest appearances on Last Man Standing. I loved Newlyweds, and agree- I think she played dumb a lot, and I think a lot of it was due to them being so young. But gaaah I really felt for Nick!

  14. Hahahah 98 Degrees was definitely second on my list. I don't think they got the credit they should have and were a little late to the boy band scene. As I said below, I still can't deal much with Hanson! Husband looked over my shoulder while I was preparing this post and said "who're the ugly girls?" I just busted out laughing, because that was what ALL of the guys in my class always thought, too!

  16. Yeah it seems a lot of them have gone on to be in Dancing with the Stars. I didn't start watching til last season, so I missed them all. I'd think they'd be pretty good, though since dancing was a big thing in their shows!
