Shhh! It's a Secret! #Blogtober14 Day 18

I have a confession to make...

I shoot guns!

My husband and his dad took me shooting for the first time in March 2012.  It was terrifying; I wouldn't shoot anything but the .22 handgun, and I only shot a couple of magazines.  Scott's reasoning was simple: we have guns in the house, and he wanted to be sure I knew how to use them if I had to while he was away.  I objected for a long time.  He asked, "What are you gonna do if someone breaks in?"  I replied, "the dogs will handle it."  "Well what happens if they hurt the dogs?"  "Well then I would have to shoot them."  "Which is why you need to know what to do so you don't shoot yourself or the dogs."  Valid point.

I didn't shoot again for about a six months.  But, then we moved to Tallahassee and Scott took me to the range a couple more times.  Neither of us felt that I would be as comfortable around them as I am now.  That Christmas, I received a .22 rifle as a gift.  It's still my favorite thing to shoot.  I'm also more accurate with a rifle than a handgun.

Two years later, I will shoot anything they hand me, except for the shotgun.  This is more a matter of principle than anything.  I told Scott from the very beginning that I wouldn't shoot it, and now it irritates the crap out of him that I'll pick up a .223 and shoot, but not a little bit of bird shot through the shotgun.

So.  Anyone shocked? Scared?

  1. Awesome secret but why is it a secret? lol I tell everyone. hahaha

  2. This is so cool. No really, it is. I've always wanted to learn how to shoot. But I guess if I say it out loud, my family will shoot me instead. Haha.

  3. Not so much a secret, but something I don't talk about often, especially on here!

  4. I'm just digging your ear protection, is that pink? :). I grew up in a gun-toting family, but I am a horrible shot. I've really only tried once. My husband really wants me to learn, maybe I should try your gun of choice!

  5. Yup! Browning pink ear muffs! My husband and Father-in-law started me out on the .22 which has next to no recoil. Once I got comfortable with that, and handling it, it didn't take much to convince me to try the others.

I love comments! Let me know what you think!
